When did wallets appear?

The origins of wallets date back to ancient Greece and Rome. At that time, people carried small leather pouches to store coins.

Interestingly, the emergence of banknotes (in China around the 7th-11th centuries) fundamentally changed the design of wallets - they became flatter.

Men's wallets, as we know them today (folding) only became popular in the early 20th century, when trousers with back pockets appeared.

The oldest wallet ever found was found in the Alps – it belonged to a person who lived more than 5,000 years ago (the so-called “Ötzi the Iceman”). His “wallet” contained fire-starting tools.

In some cultures, an empty wallet is believed to bring bad luck, so at least one coin is put in it when given as a gift.

In Japan, wallets with talismans are popular, which are believed to attract money.

In 2013, a man in the US lost his wallet, and it was returned 30 years later - it was found by construction workers in the wall. Inside were all the documents and even old checks!

There have been cases when people won the lottery just because they found a lost wallet with a ticket and honestly returned it - the owner shared the winnings.

Today, wallets have evolved into digital wallets (e.g., Apple Pay or Google Pay).
